No More Youth Political Prisoners!

UZ STUDENTS RIOT ON JUNE 16.........

June 16, 2010 University of Zimbabwe students have taken their misery to the Vice-Chancellor Nyagura’s doorstep. The students were registering their disapproval of the exorbitant stipulated tuition fees, the new ID card system, being barred to access the library and the endless closure of the Halls of Residence among other issues. UZ students saw this day as the great day to speak out as they joined the rest of Africa to commemorate the Day of the African Child.

ZINASU leadership led by the President Obert Masaraure were at the University of Zimbabwe main campus were they addressed scores of students over the outrageous privatization of education in Zimbabwe and the suppression of students’ voices. Drama unfolded during the President’s speech when members of the notorious campus security ‘Green Bombers’ tried to disrupt the proceedings to no avail as the students took up to the task.

The students jeered at the defeated security personnel however the Green Bombers came back reinforced by members of Avondale Police Station. The Zinasu President Obert Masaraure, Vice President Tafadzwa Kutya, Archford Mudzengi, Gamuchirai Mukura, Trivyn Musokera and seven others whose names are yet to be confirmed. The arrests did not deter the students’ community as they proceeded with procession led by the Deputy Sec General Welcome Zimuto, which was later disbanded by riot police. Three ZINASU National Executive Council members namely Welcome Zimuto, Faith Chamba and Kundai Chambare are being hunted by members of Avondale ZRP police station.

Meanwhile, students at Nyadire Teachers’ College are being disturbed in having their lectures as the ZANU-PF Operation Chimumu intensify in Mutoko Rural Areas. Primary School pupils are being haunted by the operation as bases are being set up on their schools; it is disturbing that these kids are now being forced to attend the ZANU-PF training sessions of engaging in violence. ZINASU urges the Principals’ led COPAC to put an end to this madness.
