Activism:

Tal is a blogger, 19 years old, who published on her blog support for the Palestinian cause and criticized the Partnership for the Mediterranean. She was arrested in December of 2009, her computer confiscated, and her mother has not heard from her since. Her mother has released statements describing the suffering that her family feels in wake of her arrest.

Current Situation in Country:

In Syria, there is an “absence of print media not controlled by the government” (Reuters). In this light, the internet is the main outlet for independent discussion and reporting. Political opposition in the country was banned and emergency law has been in place since 1963 (when the Baath party took control).
